FAQ

By Lou Bani, Elmora Youth League Basketball Coach

Hey Coach, take a look at the picture to the right, is this a foul or a legal play?

definitely a foul - "a reach-in"!

What is more important, top 10 scoring or a winning team?

Of course the correct answer is teamwork! After all, any player can increase their chance of scoring more by taking more shots - good or bad. The ultimate goal of any basketball player should be to take "high percentage" shots by passing the ball to the open player - team work!

What exactly is a Personal Foul?

from the Basketball Rules and Glossary

personal foul: contact between players that may result in injury or provide one team with an unfair advantage; players may not push, hold, trip, hack, elbow, restrain or charge into an opponent; these are also counted as team fouls.

How important is it for young players to dribble with their head up? And why? And at what age should they start learning this skill? THANK YOU

Directions to Facilities used by EYL

Basketball players should learn to dribble with their heads up at the earliest age possible. Our 3rd and 4th graders are taught that as a basic practice drill. You can start by practicing dribbling in place with your head up and looking away from the ball. Then progress to walking while dribbling with your head up and finally, running while driblling with head up and looking in all directions.

p.s. Dribbling around cones or objects is also a good practice drill. Don't forget to practice dribbling with both hands.

Good Luck
